Knights of Columbus John N. Neumann Council 6965 Information
The John N. Neumann Council was originally started at Santa Teresa Church in San Jose in 1977, prior to the existence of St. Julie Billiart Parish. Upon the creation of the St. Julie Billiart Parish, Fr. Matt Sullivan (St. Julie’s first pastor) requested a Knights of Columbus council be created at St. Julie’s. Since a large segment of the existing council members were now St. Julie parishioners, the council relocated to St. Julie’s as their home parish.
Since then, the council has established three additional rountables for three neighboring parishes, those being Santa Teresa, Holy Spirit and St. Anthony’s parishes. This council is responsible for servicing the needs of all four previously mentioned parishes and their pastors. We are involved in building maintenance, faith based and fund raising projects for each of these parishes as well as many community service projects. Some of the work includes the funding of the new kitchen in the St. Julie Sullivan Center, fund raising for Special Olympics and people with intellectual disabilities, the purchase of special equipment as needed by the parish(es) and fund raising for various parish ministries such as the youth group, the Auction Committee Gala Night, Tijuana Ministry, the St. Julie's Food Pantry, and the diocese Seminarian Fund. One of our primary fundraisers recently has been an annual Monte Carlo Night where a large portion of the proceeds are directed to St. Julie’s parish. We also clean trash from Highway 85 on a monthly basis. A number of Knights are also involved in the running of the St. Julie Food Pantry and the pantry’s holiday food bag distributions during the Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays. Early on we were also involved in numerous building remodeling projects in the downtown area for the housing of the homeless through Inn Vision.
Of our 152 members, approximately 56 are members of the St. Julie parish. Among our council members are the San Jose Diocese Bishop, Fr. Jon, Fr. Saju and Fr. Peter. The latter three priests receive our activities e-mail on a regular basis and they are aware of our activities. The ministry leaders are essentially the officers of the council who are subject to change annually. Our yearly term is from July 1st to June 30th. Currently the Grand Knight is Ken Wadors and the Deputy Grand Knight is Ernie Gargas. We are self funded via our dues and fundraising activities.
We have three meetings monthly, usually the 1st, 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. The 1st meeting is an officers meeting (Room A), the 2nd meeting is the council business meeting (Room A) and the last meeting is our council social (Room B & C).
